The Last Airbender (Movie Review)

This movie has gotten many mixed reviews (mostly negative), but quite honestly, this is not the worst movie ever.

I have to (shamefully) admit that I have not seen the TV series, but I went with a couple of friend who had seen it.  The biggest differences they noted was that Uncle Iroh was more "jolly" in the TV series, while in the movie he was portrayed as more serious and wise, and that some names were pronounced wrong.  Of course, they are shortening an entire TV series into a movie, so there are a lot of scenes left out.  One of the bigger differences I will let you figure out if you watch it - I'm not sure if you'll consider it a positive or negative difference.

If you have not seen this movie yet, please keep in mind that this is a kid's movie.  While I do not think that M. Night was the right person to direct a kid's movie - you have to keep that in mind during the entire movie.  Some of the story line and the acting can get choppy admittedly, and the music was badly placed.  A lot of the times when a scene should have sparked a laugh, it is difficult to because the music is so serious throughout the entire movie.

I saw it in 3D, and it was my first 3D movie, so I'm not sure how it stacks up to other 3D movies.  Supposedly it was not originally filmed with the intention of putting it into 3D and the elements were added afterwords.  A lot of the time you do not notice the 3D, then suddenly it stands out.  Whenever they pan the camera, it can get a little dizzy too.

Overall, it was a decent movie.  I appreciate the story, if not all of the actors, and hopefully they will grow up a little before the next movie.  I think that a lot of the negative reviews needs to be put on the cushion that again, it is a kid's movie, and it would make an 8 year old amazed.  Of course there are some amazing kids movies too... but anyways.

If you are a huge fan of the show, you WILL be disappointed by the movie.  I wouldn't suggest going to see it.  If you aren't, it's worth a shot.

What next?

But the problem is that while Avatar: The Last Airbender was initially a kid's cartoon, it was serious enough and intelligent enough and witty enough to appeal to a much larger audience, with people of a variety of ages. Trying to pass off The Last Aibender's faults by saying "Oh, well, it's a kid's movie" doesn't work because the show didn't limit itself like that. All the truly, TRULY great so-called "kid's movies" have enough in them to interest the parents / older teens / etc. TLA is a hack job that butchers and rapes everything good about the show and movies in general.

I totally agree it wasn't the best movie ever... and really it was kind of down there... but I think that mostly they chose a bad director honestly. Or maybe M. Night and Disney had a battle on how it should be and it ended up somewhere in the middle and crappy.
